This multi-faceted business comprises a tasting room in Dullstroom town, a creamery on the Pendle Hill Country Estate and a restaurant on the farm (±21 km northwest of Dullstroom on the T6 tourist road). Cheeses range from cumin gouda and white cheddar to soft goat’s cheese and smoked mozzarella, while milk comes from Jersey cows with names instead of numbers who are used to listening to the soothing sounds of Mozart. Milking is done at 7.15am and 3.15pm daily and cheese-making demos may be booked in advance.
Ethical shopper tip: these farmhouse cheeses are made the old-fashioned way, free of preservatives, colourants and chemicals. Bergen Cheese does not pasteurise their milk to ensure good development of taste and aroma. Rennets suitable for vegetarians are used.
